FLAMENCO - SUENO GITANO- JOSE DE LA NEGRETA

The art of cante (song), toque (solo guitar music) and baile (dance) was kept alive for pleasure by groups of aficionados at family gatherings and in the peñas of the towns and villages. It was in such contexts that flamenco developed, while preserving the emotional intensity and incantatory power that we associate with it. This eighth volume in the Ethnomad series provides a fine illustration of that art.
José de la Negreta, cante
José de la Negreta was born in Marseilles of Andalusian Gypsy parents. Success in the art of cante generally requires closeness to one's Andalusian roots: the fact that José is such a fine singer is regarded as a miracle.
His first recording is a tribute to the great masters of cante.

José has travelled all over the world accompanying Ana la China and Ravi Shankar Mishra in a show combining Spanish flamenco with Indian kathak.
Domingo Rubichi, guitar
Since he was very young he has accompanied the finest singers and dancers of the Jerez region. Sober, limpid, and rhythmically very precise, his playing gives ideal support: effective, inspiring, revealing, and in the purest Jerez style.
‘Jerez is not like anywhere else,’ he explains. ‘There is something here that comes from God, and which makes flamenco different.’
Luìs de la Tota, percussion and palmas
Born into a Gypsy family from Jerez, he made rhythm his speciality, thus becoming one of the most popular flamenco percussionists (cajón and palmas).
