The four musicians we hear on this recording are members of the great Mishra family of Benares, a Brahman clan that has been producing musicians and dancers for generations. The repertoire presented by Prem Kishor Mishra and his accompanists is a fine illustration
of the Benares style, with its extremely rich repertoire of ‘semi-classical’ compositions, its rhythms strongly marked by the influence of kathak dance.
